A lot of people don’t like Lily Allen. A lot of my friends don’t like Lily Allen. But I do, and was more than happy to plunk down the cash to see her in concert on her first proper US tour, despite the fact that the MTV logo was splashed all over it, making it a bit more expensive than I’d have liked. So be it. I was psyched. And I still am psyched! Lily was effing adorable and so much more talented than people would have you believe. Quite a set of lungs on that kid. And when I say kid, I do mean “kid.” Seriously, guys, what am I doing with my life? I want to be young, rap to calypso songs, talk shit about people and be famous, too. Say what you will about Lily and her ranting, bitchy ways, but she’s got the right idea, and the chops to back it up.

The doors were at 6:30 and we thought we’d be super late when we strolled in around 8, but there was just a DJ spinning. At first I thought he was trying too hard, but he turned out to be pretty great. He mixed everything from Klaxons to Michael Jackson to Bel Biv DeVoe. He got a nice round of applause when he left. Then Lily took her sweet time, finally bouncing out around 9, I believe. Her reception was enormous and loving. By the third song, a fan had already given her a t-shirt, the design of which was reminiscent of the “I [heart] NY” tourist items, except it read, “NY [hearts]” and then a photo of Lily. Aww. At first she seemed only half-amused by it, but by the end of the evening, she was holding it up for us to see, all chuffed.

Brandon Boyd of Incubus
Brandon Boyd of Incubus

It was so great to see Incubus play an intimate show at a smaller venue than what they've been used to in recent years. They appeared to really enjoy themselves, and the crowd was simply fantastic. Each band member arrived on stage separately, starting with DJ Chris Kilmore, followed by Mike Einziger on guitar, Ben Kenney on bass, Jose Pasillas at the drums, and Brandon Boyd, the lead vocalist. The opening scratches by DJ Kilmore clued us all in to what the first song of the night would be, and it was a total surprise to me. "Just A Phase" "Anna Molly" "Paper Shoes" "Nice To Know You" Brandon thanked the crowd after every song, and he sipped on a big glass of red wine. It was nice to see the interaction between him and the crowd. His eyes went big and wide, and he smiled while he held out his microphone to let the crowd sing along. "Blood On The Ground" "Out From Under" "Warning" "Here In My Room" "Redefine" "Megalomaniac" Brandon got out the maraccas to play along with "Wish You Were Here" Ben Kenney (formerly of The Roots) has been playing with the band since "A Crow Left of the Murder". For the songs before he joined the group, he plays very close to the original, but he still adds a little something to make it his own. It blends very well in my opinion, and I think he sounds amazing with the band now. "Dig" Jose Pasillas has added a little something to this song, different from the studio recording and it was very very cool. "Summer Romance (Anti Gravity)" "Sick Sad Little World" Brandon wore some gloves that had four tiny spotlights on the palms of his hands. He got on his knees and while Ben played, he put the spotlights on him while moving his hands in a trance-like fashion. He went over to Mike and did the same thing, ending with showing the light on himself. Brandon strapped on an acoustic guitar and played "Earth To Bella" (parts 1 and 2) He smiled when he heard the crowd singing the backup vocals to "hold your head…" During the encore, the crowd chanted "INC-U-BUS". They didn't keep the crowd waiting for long, and came out to perform "Quicksand" the first track on their latest CD Light Grenades. "A Kiss To Send Us Off" (A huge thanks to May for filling in the couple of blanks I had in the set list.) I hope you enjoy the photos.
